Douglas Henderson's Music for 100 Carpenters is a theatrical sound piece enlisting 100 carpenters, 100 hammers and some 10,000 nails in a real-world enactment of complex computer synthesis. Under the guidance of job supervisors, thousands of hammer blows become waves of tonal murmur; toolbelts, sweat and lunchboxes are part of the score. The installation features a bird’s-eye-view video of the performance, with superbly detailed 6-channel surround sound.
