Frederieke Taylor Gallery is pleased to present new paintings and works on paper by Olive Ayhens. In her previous body of work, the artist focused on extreme interiors that had multiple and altered perspectives creating labyrinthian interior environments. In these new works, the artist examines the overlapping boundaries of nature and architecture. This is her second exhibition with the gallery.

Olive Ayhens explores the imbalance between the natural and the built environment. Weaving the urban landscape with nature, the artist offers a fantastical sense of space. Through masterful handling of complex painting techniques, the artist plays with scale, perspectives, patterns, textures, and vibrant colors, giving us a fresh view of our surroundings.

In �Amphibian Emergency�, a newly constructed condo-building is overtaken by endangered species of frogs, while in �Interior Wilderness� an elegant hotel collapses into modern architecture as the structures are taken over by nature. In other works, specific locations are referenced from recent travels that include the island of Malta and Sicily and show the ancient history of these places co-existing with modern cars and power-plants. In another painting titled �Parallel Strata�, a modern piece of architecture melds into the landscape of the Badlands, South Dakota. Also on view will be her new works on paper which include watercolors and drawings of landscapes and cityscapes.

Olive Ayhens currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Her work will also be on view at the Brooklyn Academy of Music�s Next Art Wave Exhibition, curated by Dan Cameron through December 20, 2009. The artist was a 2006 recipient of the Guggenheim Award and has received additional awards including the Pollock-Krasner in 2001 and 1998, the Gottlieb Grant in 1996. Her most recent artist residencies include St. James Cavalier Center for Creativity, Malta 2009, WhiskeyTown 2009, MacDowell 2007, Yaddo 2006, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts 2006, and the Fundacion Valparaiso, artist residency, Spain 2005.
