Omer Fast at South London Gallery October 7th - December 6th
Posted 11/11/09

The current show on view at the South London Gallery, Nostalgia, puts the viewer in an unsettling place. I wouldn’t necessarily classify this exhibition only as a video installation, but as a conceptual art experience that deeply explores narrative devices in relation to human cognizance. The work is unsettling in terms of the ease with which one is absorbed by the videos, falling quicly and effortlessly into Omer Fast’s cleverly edited video looped sequences. One leaves completely g... [more]

Damien Hirst at The Wallace Collection October 14th - November 24th
Posted 11/11/09

I am perfectly aware that Hirst’s show, No Love Lost, Blue Paintings, opened to the public a month ago. I purposely tried very hard not to engage in this exhibition of “new” works, surprisingly to no avail. It seems like every time Hirst has an exhibition in London the entire city goes into mania. He is the artist everyone loves to hate, hates to love, controversial enough to be a household name, and everyone (including their mothers) has an opinion about his practice. To put... [more]

Boo Ritson at Poppy Sebire October 13th - November 21st
Posted 11/6/09

For every photograph that is displayed, Boo Ritson has coated her subjects in emulsion paint. Literally painting onto their clothes and skin, she serves up a humorous comparison to past histories of painted portraiture. The photographs are taken while the paint is still wet. For the artist, this makes the process an intense one, dictated by time, paint is layered on generously. Her subjects do not have a dunked or gunged effect; they are painted gesturally, quickly but accur... [more]

Ugo Rondinone at Sadie Coles HQ - South Audley St October 13th - November 21st
Posted 11/6/09

This latest exhibition from Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone is a display of new sculptures from his ongoing ‘Still.Life’ series.Objects such as bread, potatoes, walnuts, trees and cardboard have been cast in bronze and painted, looking impressively identical to the originals. The objects chosen are symbolic of still life painting and also corresponds to the transient nature depicted in the vanitas. Arranged in a very minimalist and conceptual way; the simplicity echoes the signatur... [more]

All about London at the moment there is a certain theme: Curating artists consecutively and individually but under the umbrella of one exhibition title. Here are three galleries that have a sequence of events like this to follow. 24 SEVEN Gooden Gallery, Vyner Street www.goodengallery.comTube: Bethnal Green '24 Seven' is a new curators' project space at the front of the Gooden Gallery. John Baldessari at Sprueth Magers October 12th - November 14th

‘She’s wax, she’s not real.’ A couple of girls in the street peer curiously through the gallery window at the model who reclines on a large white sofa. Then she moves and the illusion is dispelled. This is a tableau vivant by veteran conceptual artist John Baldessari whose retrospective is now on at Tate Modern. The project was conceived with renowned set designer Naomi Shohan (credits include American Beauty 1999, I am Legend 2007, and the forthcoming Sorcerer’s App... [more]

Glenn Brown at Gagosian Gallery - Britannia Street October 15th - November 26th
Posted 10/30/09

The new show of Glenn Brown at Gagosian Gallery, Britannia Street, presents work made in the past two and a half years. It marks a transition from the mid-career survey at Tate Liverpool earlier in 2009, with an  intensification of his highly individual vision . Brown came to prominence in the second wave of the YBAs in the 1990s, with intricately  plotted mutations of artworks;  from the wild panoramas of 19th century seer John Martin to expressionist port...
