Part of it is the ritual of gathering, and part of it is the phoenix-like transformation of the materials. The idea hunting and... [more]

This non-profit art space, run by filmmaker Nico Mesterharm, is another axis of activity in Phnom Penh. On any balmy evening you’ll find the patio crowded with artgoers who flock there to see the exciting program of locally produced and foreign documentaries and films. There is a distinct German bent – with funding from the Goethe institute – but a surprising amount of variety. Previously screened films include “The Wave” 2008 a German film about a teacher creates a false dictatorship in... [more]

Though thoughts of Cambodia and art most often lead to images of 12th century moss-encrusted temple carvings, Cambodia in fact, has a very interesting emerging contemporary art scene. Phnom Penh boasts a growing number of galleries and spaces such as Metahouse (see flavor pic), the French Cultural Center and Reyum Institute of Arts and Culture. Sadly there is still scant funding for the arts and many young artist survive on less than 100$ a month. But scant funds breed a certain resourcefulness an... [more]

Alexander Calder at Gagosian Gallery - Rome October 29th - January 30th, 2010

In a career that spanned most of the 20th century, the engineer-turned-artist Alexander Calder studied the science of motion through art. “Just as one can compose colors, or forms, so one can compose motions,” he once wrote. He was inspired by the universe as he imagined it, a balanced system based on the circle and the sphere. You can see all the elegance of his universe in Alexander Calder: Monumental Sculpture at Larry Gagosian’s Rome gallery. Calder’s moving sculptures (“mob... [more]

Niki de Saint-Phalle at Fondazione Roma Museo November 4th - January 17th, 2010

The first sound I heard was the clicking of high heels. All the gallery attendants at the Foundazione Roma Museo wear 4-inchers, and are dressed to kill. This is the only misstep in the museum's comprehensive retrospective of Niki De Saint Phalle, and perhaps not even that: the clicking gave me enough warning to put away my camera before I was caught snapping pictures...   Curated by Stefano Cechetto, over 100 works by Saint-Phalle are being shown; this marks the first extensive exhibition of Saint-Phalle in Italy....         Like any survey, “Hot Up Here,” organized by the CAC’s Visual Arts Director Dan Cameron, is a mixed bag not expected to have an overarching narrative the way themed shows do. This cross-section, the first of a series, displays that artists working in New Orleans and Louisiana are focusing on a variety of subjects. There is the coded and rich history of the area, warts and all. It’s something that in New Orleans is never far out of mind or covered up. Others are looking at th... [more]
